UI Students Protest Against Fee Increase
Students at the University of Ibadan students have organized a protest in response to the administration’s decision to raise tuition fees, voicing concerns over affordability and demanding the reversal of the fee increase.
This event was highlighted in a statement and video shared by media personality #EmisoLJ on X.com with the hashtag #FeesMustFall on Friday.
The statement read, “University of Ibadan students are currently protesting against tuition fee increases from 25k to 76k to 146k – 412k over two years.
“The movement is gaining strength. #FeesMustFall.” The video depicted students marching towards the administrative building, chanting a song advocating for free education.
It was reported on Friday that the students at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State have commenced a fresh protest after the university’s governing council endorsed a recent fee hike.
The demonstrations, which began at midnight on Friday, were reportedly triggered by a circular issued on Thursday by the council’s secretary, G.O. Saliu.
The circular stated that after a meeting on Thursday, the council had “considered the reviewed schedule of levies for newly admitted and returning undergraduate students in the 2023/2024 academic session and approved it as recommended by the university Senate.”
