Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, will deliver the convocation lecture at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, Adamawa State, as part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations. The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by Ibrahim Umar, the spokesman for Peter Obi Media Reach.
The lecture, which also serves as the university’s 16th Founder’s Day event, is scheduled for Saturday and will highlight the institution’s achievements over two decades. According to Umar, Obi’s speech aligns with his history of delivering keynote addresses at prominent educational institutions worldwide, including Harvard University and Yale University.
Honouring Educational Contributions
The event will also honor AUN’s founder, former Vice-President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for his contributions to education and societal development. Established in 2003, AUN has grown into a leading American-style university in Nigeria, earning a top-three spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 Global Impact Rankings among Nigerian universities.
Focusing on Development and Education
AUN is celebrated for its unique approach to education, encouraging students to direct their learning and research toward solving socio-economic challenges in Africa. The university’s President, Prof. DeWayne Frazier, expressed excitement about Obi’s participation.
“I am pleased and honored to announce that Mr. Peter Obi will be our keynote speaker. He is a champion of education and an accomplished public servant who has dedicated his life to providing quality leadership and service to Nigerians. He is the ideal speaker to celebrate our 20 years,” Frazier stated.
AUN also hosts the American Window in the North-East, providing access to information about scholarships and research opportunities in the United States for students and the general public.
