Tinubu’s UK Trip A Strategic Retreat, Return Will Bring Positive Changes — Okupe

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to take a two-week holiday in the United Kingdom, labeling criticisms of the trip as uninformed. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Okupe emphasized that the President’s trip was a strategic move, allowing him to reflect on the past 17 months of his administration and chart a new course without distractions from political associates.

Okupe, who previously served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign, noted that during times of national crisis, it is common for presidents to temporarily step away from their immediate environment to gain perspective and avoid interference. He argued that staying in Nigeria would not provide the necessary peaceful atmosphere for Tinubu to focus on his objectives, which include potential cabinet adjustments.

According to Okupe, the President’s return after this retreat is expected to bring positive changes and provide comfort to Nigerians. Tinubu’s departure from Abuja on October 2 was announced by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, who described the trip as both a working vacation and an opportunity for the President to reflect on the government’s ongoing economic reforms.
