Italian Cup: Bologna Lose to Ternana

Bologna were knocked out of the Italian Cup in the first round 5-4 by Ternana on Monday in an astonishing match in which the second-division side were four goals ahead with less than an hour on the clock.

Ternana were promoted to Serie B last season but showed no signs of stage fright in Bologna as a Danilo Peralta brace and further goals from Davide Agazzi, Alfredo Donnarumma and Cesar Falletti put them 5-1 ahead eight minutes into the second half.

Quick-fire strikes moments after from Marko Arnautovic and Roberto Soriano got the hosts back in contention.

Riccardo Orsolini’s penalty 12 minutes from the end cut the gap to just one goal and Bologna would have levelled had it not been for Ternana goalkeeper Antony Iannarilli, who first made two stops from Musa Barrow and then pulled off a double save from Sydney van Hooijdonk and Matias Svanberg.

Ternana will face Venezia in the second round in December.

In Monday’s other early match Crotone got past Brescia on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Salernitana face Reggina while Sampdoria host Alessandria in the late matches.
