Nigeria Plans ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ To Fight Malnutrition
The Federal Government of Nigeria is planning an ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ scheme to encourage and develop the establishment of urban farms and little home gardens nationwide.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo mentioned that the scheme, which would take place in collaboration with states under the auspices of the National Economic Council and the National Council on Nutrition, was part of means to deal with malnutrition and other similar issues.
According to the Vice President on Monday, the intention for this initiative is part of three main plans which springs up from the UN-backed Food Systems Dialogues, to advance the fight against malnutrition.
He said other were to provide support to farmers all over the country, most importantly by making available useful weather and soil pattern information that would further improve farming yields, and also encouraging state governments to ensure swift release of budget for nutrition and related activities.
The Vice President said; “There are practical steps that can be taken by the states and Federal Government in the next 12 months, I think that some of the suggestions are important, especially those that have come from the UN Food System Dialogue.”
