FCT Teachers Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory chapter have threatened to go on an indefinite strike following their ongoing five-day warning strike if their demands are not met.

Last Thursday, the teachers had began a five-day warning strike to demand enhanced security in schools and payment of arrears of promotion benefits.

However, the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello, on the same day, met with the FCT Chairman of the NUT, Stephen Knabayi.

While the minister promised to pay the promotion benefit arrears of the teachers before the end of 2021, an agreement has not been reached with the six area council chairmen.

According to Knabayi, the union would not call off the strike. He also said that it would immediately after the strike resume an indefinite strike.

He accused the chairmen of not having a meeting with the teachers.

He said, “The area council chairmen are yet to reach out to us, you can help us find out why they are yet to do so.

Once this warning strike ends, the next thing is to proceed on an indefinite one.

“We have been patient enough and we have shifted ground also through our patience. We are talking of arrears since 2015 what else do you want us to do?

“For now, I am not even sure that if they call for a meeting, we will attend.”
