Samoei Ruto Declared Winner Of Kenya Presidential Race
Dr. William Samoei Ruto has been declared winner of the 2022 Kenya presidential election, beating out his main opponent Raila Odinga in one of the most tightly contested presidential races in Kenyan elections history.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced the official final results of the presidential race on Monday at the national tallying centre, Bomas of Kenya, indicating that Ruto surpassed the 50% + 1 threshold needed to be elected the new Commander-in-Chief garnering 7,176,121 (50.49%) Votes.
Odinga came in close second receiving 6, 942,930 (48.85%) of the votes.
This is Ruto’s first stab at the presidency taking over from President Uhuru Kenyatta, his former boss, and once ‘close friend’.
As per the law, if no petition is lodged at the Supreme Court by the end of seven days after Chebukati declares the result, Ruto will be sworn into office by the end of the month.
A presidential petition can be filed at The Supreme Court within seven days of the declaration of the results by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. The petitions can be filed up until August 22.
In case no petition is filed by August 22, then the new president will be sworn in on August 29, which is 14 days after the last day that IEBC can declare the presidential results and in accordance with Article 141(2)(a) of the 2010 Constitution.
