Rafael Leao Signs New AC Milan Contract
Rafael Leao has signed a new five-year contract with Serie A side, AC Milan.
The 23-year-old, who joined Milan from Lille in August 2018, has been rewarded for helping his side progress to the semi-final stage of the Champions League.
He also played a key role in last season’s Serie A title win — the first time Milan lifted the Scudetto since 2011.
Milan has moved to tie Leao down to a new contract until June 2028 as his most recent deal at San Siro was due to expire in June 2024.
Leao is an injury doubt for the first leg of AC Milan’s Champions League semi-final against city rivals Inter Milan.
He sustained an injury to his right thigh within the first 11 minutes of his side’s 2-0 league win over Lazio on Saturday.
Leao returned to training on Tuesday but worked separately from his teammates, and Milan coach Stefano Pioli has admitted he will wait until closer to kick-off to make a decision over his involvement in the first leg.
“Tomorrow (Wednesday) he will try to push himself to the maximum to understand if he can take part in the match,” Pioli said.
“If I call him up, it will be because he’s fit to play. If the tests are fine, he could even start.”
Leao, who has been capped 18 times by Portugal, has scored 13 goals and claimed 13 assists in 44 appearances for Milan so far this season.
