Reasons you should never sleep on your stomach as a pregnant woman

Sleeping on your stomach during pregnancy is generally safe during the early stages of pregnancy when the uterus and amniotic fluid cushion and protect the fetus. However, as the pregnancy progresses, it can become increasingly uncomfortable and potentially harmful to the baby. Here are some reasons why you should avoid sleeping on your stomach as a pregnant woman:

As the baby bump grows, sleeping on your stomach can cause it to move inside your stomach and press against the aorta and IVC, which can reduce blood flow to the baby.

Sleeping on your stomach can alter the natural curvature of the spine, causing neck and shoulder problems such as pain, stiffness, and soreness.

Sleeping on your back can decrease the return of blood to the heart, causing shortness of breath or a racing heart.

Lying on your back can also put pressure on the inferior vena cava, a major vein that returns blood from the lower body to the heart, which can cause discomfort.

The best sleeping position during pregnancy is on your side, especially the left side, which lets the most blood flow to the fetus and improves kidney function.

Placing a pillow between your knees and one under your abdomen can create enough of a tilt to help you sleep more comfortably on your side.

If you have any concerns about your sleeping position during pregnancy, talk to your healthcare provider for advice.
