Dieting may not work for everyone this is the reason people undergo gastric bypass. Before undergoing gastric bypass surgery, there are several things to consider. Here are five things to keep in mind:

Risks and complications: Gastric bypass surgery is a major surgery and carries risks such as excessive bleeding, infection, blood clots, and lung or breathing problems. Longer-term risks and complications can include bowel obstruction, dumping syndrome, gallstones, hernias, low blood sugar, malnutrition, stomach perforation, ulcers, and vomiting.

Preparation: In the weeks leading up to surgery, you may be required to start a physical activity program and stop any tobacco use. You may also have restrictions on eating and drinking and which medications you can take.

Lifestyle changes: To achieve your target weight, you need to make a lifelong commitment to making major changes to your diet and lifestyle. You need to be emotionally ready for your weight loss journey.

Vitamins and supplements: After surgery, you will need to take vitamins and supplements to ensure that your body is getting enough important nutrients from food.

Expected weight loss: Gastric bypass surgery can result in significant weight loss, but the amount of weight loss varies from person to person. It’s important to have realistic expectations and to work closely with your healthcare team to achieve your weight loss goals.
