Defence Chief Instructs Commanders to Provide Support for Borno Flood Victims
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, on Tuesday, instructed the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai to provide all necessary support to victims of the devastating floods in Borno State.
Floodwaters have engulfed major roads, homes, and shops across Maiduguri, the state capital, and parts of Jere Local Government Area, causing widespread damage. Among the most alarming reports is the breach of a prison wall in the Customs area, which led to several inmates reportedly drowning, while many others escaped amidst the chaos.
In a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen Tukur Gusau and General Musa expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events. He assured the public that the military would collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to provide swift relief and support to affected communities.
The statement read, “The CDS was saddened to learn of the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of thousands of citizens due to the flood from Alo Dam. On behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), the Chief of Defence Staff extends heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones, and to the government and people of Borno State during this challenging period.”
The CDS emphasized the military’s commitment to standing by the people of Borno, ensuring the safe evacuation of affected residents, and supporting ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts. He further assured that the AFN would continue to work alongside federal and state authorities to mitigate the suffering caused by the disaster.
