Two Dies, Four Sustain Injuries In Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash
A total of two persons lost their lives after falling off a moving vehicle along the Moutain Top area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday.
Four other persons sustained injuries in the accident that happened at about 2 pm.
An eyewitness who was identified as Sadiq disclosed in an interview that the victims who were being conveyed in a long vehicle had stood up while it approached the bridge in the area.
The victims were said to have not taken note of the height of the bridge and collided with it leading to their fall from the vehicle and eventual death.
Sadiq said, “They (the victims) did not know that the height of the vehicle was closer to the bridge so they stood up while the car was under the bridge.
“As soon as the vehicle gets under the bridge, they had a collision with it leading them to fall from the vehicle and their instant death.”
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview on Sunday.
She stressed that the vehicle was overloaded with goods and passengers which contributed to the accident.
According to her, the victims’ bodies have been deposited at a morgue in the state.
She said, “The accident happened at about 14:12hrs. Two people died while four others were injured. The vehicle was overloaded with goods and passengers which contributed to the accident.
“The victims’ bodies were deposited at a morgue.”
She however urged motorists to desist from the habit of overloading their vehicles while embarking on road journeys.
“By the design of the bridge, it can accommodate any vehicle, so for the passengers to have fallen shows that the vehicle was overloaded.
“Motorists should desist from overloading their vehicles to avoid a recurrence of such incidents. The FRSC commiserates with the families of the deceased,” she concluded.
