Obasanjo Advocates For Expert Leadership to Drive Economic Revival In Nigeria
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern over the prevalence of mediocrity in Nigeria’s governance and the subsequent toll it has taken on the nation’s economy. Speaking at a valedictory event for Prof. Chinedum Babalola, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University in Abeokuta, Obasanjo stressed that Nigeria possesses numerous skilled technocrats capable of steering the country toward economic prosperity. He questioned why the country continues to rely on underqualified leaders who have driven Nigerians into severe economic hardship.
Obasanjo cited examples of Nigerians leading major global organizations, including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at the World Trade Organization and Amina Mohammed as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. He pointed out that if Nigerians are trusted to lead at such high levels internationally, the country should also harness this talent domestically to revitalize the economy. He urged that Nigerians “must look inward” and commit to building a diversified economy through agriculture, tourism, industry, and education.
Reflecting on past national assets, Obasanjo described how Nigeria’s shipping line, which once boasted 24 ships under his administration, had been squandered over the years. He recounted a specific incident where a training ship that had been sold off was later repurchased at a significantly inflated cost, illustrating a wasteful lack of foresight. He added that the tragic story of Nigeria Airways reflects similar mismanagement, which has repeatedly hindered the nation’s growth and stability.
Obasanjo also highlighted the lack of accountability within the system, pointing to cases like that of a former police pension official who stole vast sums but received minimal punishment. He argued that this absence of consequences emboldens others to engage in similar acts, perpetuating cycles of corruption and inefficiency.
In closing, Obasanjo commended Chrisland University’s founder, Dr. Winifred Awosika, for her dedication to educational advancement and acknowledged Prof. Babalola for her impressive contributions to the university. He reiterated that Nigeria has both the talent and the potential to achieve substantial progress but requires a collective effort to bring about meaningful change.
