Obasanjo Praises Obaseki’s Leadership, Advocates For Human Capital Development
During the inauguration of the newly rebuilt 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, former President Olusegun Obasanjo praised Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki for his transformative leadership and commitment to human capital development. Obasanjo described Obaseki as a “builder” whose initiatives over the past eight years have significantly improved Edo State, urging other political leaders to prioritize investments in human capital.
Obasanjo highlighted the hospital as a testament to Obaseki’s vision of delivering accessible, quality healthcare. “This facility,” he said, “embodies the power of a visionary leader in building a strong, healthy state and nation.” The former president acknowledged the hospital’s role in bridging primary and specialized healthcare, ensuring quality care for all, regardless of socioeconomic status. Additionally, he commended the governor for honoring the legacy of the late First Lady Stella Obasanjo, noting that this project is both a tribute and an asset that will elevate healthcare standards in Nigeria.
Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, also lauded Obaseki’s achievements. She recognized his efforts to restore Edo State as a center for affordable healthcare, expressing gratitude for the renovation of the hospital named after the late Stella Obasanjo.
Governor Obaseki reflected on his administration’s achievements, emphasizing that the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the urgent need for healthcare reform. He committed to a healthcare overhaul that focuses on both infrastructure and skilled medical personnel. Obaseki stated that his government has refurbished 60 primary healthcare centers and established the Edo Health Insurance Scheme, enrolling over 300,000 residents. “This hospital represents not just infrastructure but a commitment to values of compassion, care, and hope,” he said, underscoring the importance of a robust healthcare system that prioritizes primary care and human resources.
The governor’s healthcare initiatives aim to make Edo State a medical tourism hub. He also voiced concerns about political interference, revealing that the detention of Edo State’s Accountant-General by the EFCC had impacted the state’s financial operations, hindering ongoing projects. Obaseki cautioned political leaders against prioritizing narrow interests over the welfare of their constituents, urging them to consider the benefits of facilities like the Stella Obasanjo Hospital that serve public health needs.
