Former Councillor Shot Dead By Suspected Cultists In Abeokuta

On Friday evening, gunmen suspected to be cultists shot and killed a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Mutiu Akinbami, popularly known as Egor. The incident occurred around Brewery Bus Stop in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, while Akinbami was on a motorcycle with his son.

Details of the Incident

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, who trailed Akinbami from his residence in Olomore Federal Housing Estate, were driving a white, unregistered Toyota Hilux with tinted windows. They caught up with him near Brewery Bus Stop around 6:30 p.m. and opened fire, fatally shooting him in the head.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday. According to Odutola, the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa quickly dispatched patrol teams to the scene after receiving the report. The victim was transported to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Cultism Allegations

Preliminary investigations revealed that Akinbami was a known member of the Eiye confraternity and had previously held a leadership position at the Federal College of Education, Osiele. Police reports also suggest he had been listed as a wanted individual.

Odutola added that arrests have been made in connection to the incident and assured the public that further updates will follow as investigations continue.

Rising Cult-Related Violence

This tragic incident is the latest in a series of cult-related killings in Abeokuta. Last month, suspected cultists murdered Adeleke Adeyinka, the All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, at Oke Ilewo.

The spate of cult-related violence has raised concerns among residents, who are calling on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to address the menace of cultism in the region.

As investigations into Akinbami’s murder progress, authorities are under pressure to curb the growing insecurity and restore public confidence in the safety of the area.
