Court Sacks MC Oluomo As President Of NURTW, Affirms Baruwa
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has confirmed Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as the legitimate President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The court also upheld the judgment delivered by the National Industrial Court on March 11, 2024, in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023, which affirmed Baruwa’s presidency of the NURTW.
It ruled that the appeal filed by Najeem Usman Yasin, Tajudeen Agbede, and others contesting the Industrial Court’s decision lacked merit and dismissed it.
A three-member panel of Justices—Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi—declared Baruwa as the legally elected President of the union.
The appellate court further imposed a fine of N100,000 against the appellants, loyal to MC Oluomo, in favor of the respondents.
At a press conference, Baruwa criticized Oluomo’s inauguration, calling it both laughable and a defiance of judicial authority, as it contravened the March 11 and November 8 rulings by the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal. These judgments restrained the Yasin-led faction from interfering in the union’s activities and the operations of the Baruwa-led National Executives of the NURTW.
Baruwa emphasized that the NURTW is governed by law, with a constitution clearly outlining the guidelines for elections into its offices.
He urged the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation to enforce the Appeal Court’s judgment to maintain peace, order, and adherence to the rule of law.
