Abia First Lady Supports Cancer Patients With N3.5m Donation
The First Lady of Abia State, Priscilla Otti, has demonstrated her commitment to the fight against cancer by donating N3.5 million to underprivileged cancer patients in the state. The donation, presented on Tuesday during the 2024 World Cancer Day celebration in Umuahia, aims to support patients in covering treatment costs and alleviating their financial burdens.
Mrs. Otti emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to combat the growing cancer crisis, which has become a significant public health concern in Nigeria. She stated, “We understand the financial strain that cancer treatment can place on individuals and their families. That is why we are providing this financial assistance to ease their journey toward recovery.”
The Cancer Burden in Nigeria
Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Mrs. Otti shared alarming statistics:
•Breast cancer: Nearly 28,000 new cases diagnosed annually in Nigeria.
•Cervical cancer: About 14,000 new cases reported each year.
•Men’s health: A rising incidence of prostate and colon cancer.
She noted that Abia State has not been spared from these trends, stressing the importance of early detection and prevention in reversing the growing cancer burden. “This occasion symbolizes a call to robust action for every individual, family, and community to unite in the fight against cancer,” she added.
Health Commissioner’s Perspective
The event was also attended by the Abia State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, who described the initiative as a milestone in the state’s battle against cancer. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and addressing cancer-related challenges through awareness, education, and improved medical facilities.
Call to Action
The First Lady’s gesture underscores the need for a concerted effort to tackle cancer in Abia and Nigeria at large. Collaborative actions involving governments, healthcare providers, and communities are essential to improving access to early detection, treatment, and prevention measures.
Mrs. Otti’s initiative serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to address the devastating impact of cancer and support those affected by the disease.
