Edo Governor Okpebholo Mourns Nigeria’s Oldest Catholic Priest, Monsignor Thomas Oleghe
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep condolences to the Catholic community in Nigeria following the passing of Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in the country. Monsignor Oleghe, who was 104 years old, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, November 24, 2024.
In a press statement issued on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo praised Monsignor Oleghe’s exemplary life, describing it as a source of inspiration for Nigerians. He lauded the late priest’s humility, sacrifices, and positive impact on countless lives, particularly in the Auchi Diocese of the Catholic Church.
Okpebholo stated:
“Although he lived a fulfilled life and died at the ripe age of 104 years, we will continue to miss his fatherly roles and how he touched many lives. On behalf of the people and Government of Edo State, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family of late Fr. Oleghe, the Catholic Church Community in Nigeria, especially the Auchi Diocese. May God grant his soul eternal rest, amen.”
Monsignor Oleghe: A Life of Service
Monsignor Oleghe was from Igiode town in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State. Known for his devotion and service to the Church, he leaves behind a legacy of faith and community leadership.
Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Auchi Diocese confirmed Monsignor Oleghe’s passing in a statement, noting that the priest transitioned at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Bishop also announced funeral arrangements, stating:
“We have resolved to celebrate his funeral on Wednesday, the 27th of November, 2024. May his lovely and gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
