Lagos Judicial Panel Awards N10m Each To 2 Victims Of Police Brutality
Two petitioners have been awarded N10 million each as compensation by the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Restitution and Inquiry set up to investigate cases of police brutality especially involving officers of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
The two petitioners, Kudirat Abayomi and Hannah Olugbodi, were awarded the compensation on Friday.
In a petition involving Mrs. Kudirat Adebayo Abayomi, who was killed by a police stray bullet in April 2017, the panel on Friday, recommended the prosecution of the erring police officers.
Doris Okuwobi, chairperson of the panel, presented the cheques to the victims on behalf of the state government.
In November 2020, Olugbodi, a hair stylist, had narrated to the panel how a stray bullet from a police officer had shattered her left leg, and left her in crutches.
The panel was mandated to hear petitions from alleged victims and ensure they get justice through prosecution of offenders, and compensation as a form of relief for the victims.
