Global Outage Hits Meta’s Apps: Facebook, Instagram, And WhatsApp Affected
In a significant disruption, millions of users worldwide have reported outages across Meta’s primary platforms—Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The issue has rendered many users unable to load accounts or post content, sparking widespread concern and discussion online.
According to Downdetector, which tracks online service interruptions, outage reports surged dramatically. Over 107,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while Instagram logged over 71,000 complaints globally. Many WhatsApp users also faced challenges accessing the app.
Users encountering the issues on Facebook were greeted with a message stating, “We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.” The outage also led to a spike in activity on X (formerly Twitter), where users turned to verify the disruption. The hashtags #instagramdown and #whatsappdown quickly began trending on the platform.
One user, Shay (@uloveshaaay), tweeted, “Every time my Instagram or Facebook doesn’t work, I run to Twitter to see if it’s just me. Thank God I’m not the only one!” Similarly, @iamrazi18 posted, “Me running to Twitter to see if everyone else’s #Whatsapp #Facebook #Instagram is down or if it’s my internet.”
Reacting to the situation on Wednesday, Meta issued a statement on X, acknowledging the technical issues. “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” the company said.
Meta’s individual platforms also responded. Instagram posted, “Hi, we know there’s a technical issue impacting some people’s ability to access Instagram. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience.” WhatsApp similarly assured users, stating, “We’re actively working on a solution and starting to see a return to normal for most people.”
This outage follows a series of similar disruptions affecting Meta’s platforms, including a significant one in March. While the company works to resolve the technical issues, users remain in limbo, relying on updates to determine when normal service will resume.
Meta’s services are critical for billions of users globally, making such outages a major disruption in digital communication and social interaction.
