First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Disburses N50 Million To Elderly Citizens In Nasarawa State
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, disbursed a total of N50 million to 250 elderly vulnerable men and women drawn from the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa State. The disbursement took place during the second edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Elderly Support Scheme in Lafia, the state capital.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu, represented by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Rufai-Ibrahim, explained that the programme was designed to support the welfare of elderly citizens aged 65 years and above in all 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Nationwide Support for the Elderly
The First Lady revealed that a total of N1.9 billion had been earmarked for disbursement to elderly men and women across the country as part of efforts to cushion the economic challenges being faced by citizens. Veterans under the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) are also beneficiaries of the scheme.
“The Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative has decided to increase the initial grant of N100,000 to N200,000 this year to provide further support to our elderly citizens during this festival season. A total of N1.9bn will be disbursed across the nation,” Tinubu said.
She added that RHI coordinators across the 36 states, the FCT, and DEPOWA had each received N50 million for distribution, with N200,000 allocated to each beneficiary.
Free Medical Care for the Elderly
addition to the cash grants, Tinubu announced that free medical care for elderly citizens would soon commence nationwide to improve their health and overall well-being.
“I congratulate all the senior citizens who have been selected as beneficiaries, but I want to urge you all to prioritise your health, eat well, stay hydrated, and do little exercises regularly. You also need adequate rest, and try to spend quality time with your loved ones,” she advised.
Recognition and Gratitude
Tinubu expressed her gratitude to the Nasarawa State First Lady, Salifat Abdullahi-Sule, and other state First Ladies for their dedication and sacrifices toward improving the lives of vulnerable citizens in their respective states.
Appeal to Beneficiaries
During the symbolic presentation of cash and wrappers to the beneficiaries, Salifat Abdullahi-Sule applauded the First Lady for her tireless efforts in supporting vulnerable women and men across the country. She urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds and items received to justify the initiative’s objectives.
“This initiative is a reflection of the compassion and commitment of the President’s wife to the welfare of the elderly in our society. I appeal to all beneficiaries to use this support wisely,” she said.
The Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme underscores the Tinubu administration’s focus on addressing the needs of vulnerable groups, with particular attention to elderly citizens across the nation.
