Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Sunday formally installed Oba Adesuyi Haastrup as the new Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, presenting him with the staff of office and instrument of appointment in a grand ceremony at the Obokungbusi Town Hall, Ilesa.
The event was attended by a host of prominent dignitaries, including traditional rulers such as the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Adedotun; the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi; and the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, among others.
Oba Haastrup’s enthronement follows the passing of the previous Owa-Obokun, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran, who reigned for 40 years until his death on September 12, 2024, at the age of 86.
Governor Adeleke’s Call for Development
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Adeleke urged Oba Haastrup to leverage his vast experience and connections to foster the development of Ijesaland. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to intensifying development efforts across the state.
“I call on all sons and daughters of Ijesaland to support the growth of this great land. Together, we can continue to make Osun a beacon of development,” Adeleke said.
Oba Haastrup’s Vision for Ijesaland
In his acceptance speech, Oba Haastrup outlined his plans for Ijesaland, focusing on economic growth, youth empowerment, and addressing land-related issues. He announced plans for the establishment of a vocational school, Ijesa Technical Institute, to train artisans and promote local production.
“The time for contest is over. Let us unite and build a stronger, more prosperous future for Ijesaland. There is no victor, no vanquished,” the monarch stated.
The new king also declared a zero-tolerance policy for land grabbing in Ijesaland and pledged to promote agriculture, agro-allied industries, and creative ventures to drive economic development.
Traditional Rites and Coronation
Following the presentation of the staff of office, Oba Haastrup proceeded to the traditional seclusion period, during which other rites will be performed. According to a statement from the Owa-Obokun Media Office, an elaborate coronation party befitting the first-class monarch will be announced after his seclusion.
Oba Haastrup, a former deputy governor of Osun State, brings a wealth of administrative experience to his new role. His vision and leadership are expected to usher in a new era of progress and unity for the people of Ijesaland.
