Anglican Primate Urges Focus On Food Security And Poverty Alleviation

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, has called for urgent attention to address food security and poverty in Nigeria. Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Ndukuba emphasized the need for decisive actions to combat hunger, insecurity, and the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.

Referring to the recent tragic stampedes during the distribution of palliatives in Abuja, Ibadan, and Okija, the Primate extended condolences to the families of the victims and stressed the importance of tackling poverty and hunger. He stated that these incidents highlight the urgent need to address the root causes of the nation’s hardships.

The situation in Nigeria demands sacrifice,” Ndukuba said, urging leaders to prioritize national interests over personal gains. He called on the political class to take the challenges seriously and exhibit genuine commitment to the nation’s development.

While acknowledging the efforts of the current administration to address these challenges, the Anglican leader urged Nigerians to exercise patience, assuring them that the government’s measures would eventually yield transformative results.

Food Security and Insecurity

The Primate underscored the critical link between insecurity and food scarcity, noting that many farmers are unable to cultivate their land due to safety concerns. “If farmers don’t go to the farm and bring out food, there will be nothing for us to eat. The little that is provided will result in a scramble by many to get a share,” he said, stressing that resolving insecurity is foundational to achieving food security.

Patriotism and National Values

Ndukuba also called for renewed patriotism among Nigerians, emphasizing the importance of unity and mutual love. He urged the National Orientation Agency to embark on campaigns promoting core national values and patriotism to foster a sense of collective responsibility among citizens.

Call to Action

The Anglican Primate’s message serves as a call to both the government and citizens to work together in addressing the nation’s challenges. He encouraged leaders to prioritize policies that promote food security and poverty alleviation while urging Nigerians to remain patient and united in their pursuit of a better Nigeria.
