Antoine Griezmann Completes Sensational Return To Atletico Madrid From Barca
Antoine Griezmann has completed his shock Deadline Day return to Atletico Madrid on loan from Barcelona.
Griezmann, 30, spent five seasons at Atletico before moving to Barcelona for a fee of around €120 million in 2019. He made 102 appearances for Barcelona in which he has scored 35 goals and totalled 17 assists.
This season Griezmann has played almost every minute of Barcelona’s first three league games against Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao, and Getafe.
Cash-strapped Barça were the big losers of the late flurry of activity because not only did wage-bill pressure force them to farm-out Griezmann but they were only able to bring in Luuk de Jong (Sevilla’s third choice centre-forward) as a replacement.
Barcelona confirmed his departure, saying Atletico “will pay the player’s wages“, adding that the deal includes a compulsory permanent transfer clause when his loan finishes. Neither club disclosed the obligation-to-buy fee but it was reportedly set at €40m.
