APC Dominates Local Government Elections In Cross River And Nasarawa States
In a significant show of political strength, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed victory in all local government chairmanship positions during the elections held on Saturday, November 2, in both Cross River and Nasarawa States.
In Cross River, Dr. Ekong Boco, the Chairman of the Cross River State Electoral Commission, announced the results at the commission’s headquarters in Calabar on Sunday. The APC achieved a landslide victory across all 18 local government areas, including Abi, Odukpani, Bakassi, Akpabuyo, Ogoja, and Calabar South, among others. Following the declaration, certificates of return were issued to the successful candidates.
Governor Bassey Otu congratulated the newly elected chairmen and commended the peaceful conduct of the elections. He expressed confidence that the new local government leaders would align with his administration’s “people’s first” agenda, emphasizing the need for cooperation to realize the state’s vision for good governance.
In Nasarawa State, the APC also secured all 13 chairmanship positions available. The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) announced that the APC won 140 out of 147 electoral wards, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) claimed five and two seats, respectively. NASIEC Chairman Ayuba Wandai Usman declared the results in Lafia, expressing gratitude to the electorate for their commitment to democratic principles at the grassroots level.
The APC’s chairmanship candidates in Nasarawa achieved notable victories, with the following vote counts: Lafia (217,573 votes), Doma (70,545 votes), Keana (35,094 votes), Awe (59,206 votes), and Obi (93,486 votes), among others.
Despite the overwhelming success of the APC, nine opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party, participated in the elections, though many did not field candidates in all 196 local council wards across the 18 local government areas.
The outcome of these elections further solidifies the APC’s position in both states, as the newly elected leaders are set to play a critical role in local governance and align with the broader state development agenda.
