Benzema Scores As Real Madrid Defeats PSG
Karim Benzema bagged three goals as Real Madrid fought back from two goals down on aggregate to move into the Champions League quarter-finals with a dramatic 3-1 second-leg victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
Kylian Mbappe, wanted by Madrid, put PSG in total control of the last-16 tie by netting in the 39th minute at the Santiago Bernabeu after scoring the winning goal in the first leg.
But visiting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted Benzema a goal just after the hour mark. The Frenchman scored twice more in the space of two minutes late on as the PSG defence capitulated and Real progressed with a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
All eyes were on Mbappe, who was the only player to be cheered by Madrid’s fans before the game as they were gifted an up-close preview of the player they hope will be theirs this summer.
“Every game is a final now for us in the Champions League and La Liga but today we showed that Real Madrid is alive,” said Benzema.
