Bournemouth Beats Manchester City 2-1, Semenyo Stars
Manchester City’s impressive 32-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League was broken with a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday, allowing Liverpool to take the lead at the top of the standings.
Bournemouth found the net on either side of halftime, with goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, before Josko Gvardiol managed to score a consolation goal for City.
Pep Guardiola’s team experienced their first defeat of the season across all competitions earlier in the week when they were knocked out of the League Cup by Tottenham. The squad’s performance was impacted by multiple injuries.
Before the match, Guardiola mentioned that many players were pushing through physical discomfort. Bournemouth, who had defeated Arsenal in their previous home game, further deepened City’s troubles.
Semenyo spun onto Milos Kerkez’s cross to open the scoring on nine minutes.
Evanilson steered home another Kerkez delivery just after the hour mark.
Gvardiol’s towering header from Ilkay Gundogan’s cross gave City life eight minutes from time.
And Erling Haaland should have snatched a point deep into stoppage time when he hit the post from point-blank range.
City fall two points behind Liverpool, who came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield.
But a first league defeat since December was not as costly as it could have been as title rivals Arsenal also fell to defeat, 1-0 at Newcastle.
