COAS Assures Troops Of Systematic Rotations, Enhanced Welfare, And Operational Upgrades
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare, morale, and operational effectiveness of Nigerian Army personnel, particularly those deployed on the frontline. Speaking during the COAS Annual Conference held in Abuja on Monday, he outlined a series of initiatives aimed at addressing troop welfare, upgrading combat capabilities, and ensuring operational excellence.
Lt. Gen. Oluyede emphasized the importance of systematic troop rotations to prevent fatigue and sustain morale. He noted that under his leadership, the Army would prioritize measures to enhance the physical and mental well-being of its personnel. He stated:
“I am dedicated to maintaining systematic troop rotations to relieve personnel who have overstayed in the field and to introduce fresh forces into our operational theatres. This practice is essential for preserving the physical and mental well-being of our troops, preventing fatigue, boosting morale across the Force, and ultimately enhancing operational effectiveness.”
Scaling Up Operations in 2025
The COAS reassured Nigerians of the Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and restoring peace. He pledged to scale up operations in 2025 through both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts, as well as continued acquisition of platforms and combat enablers to bolster the Army’s capabilities.
He highlighted the refurbishment of critical equipment such as T-72 tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers, and artillery pieces, which have significantly improved operational readiness.
“Our determination to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity must be stronger than ever, and we will relentlessly pursue excellence in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” Oluyede said.
Focus on Troop Welfare
The COAS also underscored his administration’s dedication to improving welfare schemes for soldiers and their families, particularly for widows and dependents of fallen heroes. He reiterated his commitment to timely financial assistance, access to healthcare, and educational sponsorship for the children of deceased or disabled personnel.
“By prioritizing these welfare initiatives, we honour their service and reinforce our duty of care, ensuring that the families of our fallen and injured personnel are respected,” he said.
As part of the welfare initiatives, cheques worth millions of naira were presented to the Next-of-Kin of deceased personnel under the Group Life Insurance scheme. Additionally, 12 Regimental Sergeant Majors received Hilux vehicles to enhance morale.
Sustaining Support for Disabled Personnel
Lt. Gen. Oluyede reaffirmed that the Army would continue to provide robust support for personnel who sustained disabilities in the line of duty, ensuring they receive the assistance and respect they deserve.
