Customs To Suspend Import Duties, Taxes On Essential Food Items
To tackle the widespread hunger in the nation, the Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed its readiness to implement the federal government’s suspension of import duties and taxes on essential food items.
In a video shared on the NCS official X handle on Monday, just days before the August 1 #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest, Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi announced this initiative.
Acknowledging the economic challenges facing the nation, Mr. Adeniyi explained that the suspension aims to make food items more affordable for Nigerians.
He stated, “Global inflation is affecting nations worldwide, including Nigeria. In response, the federal government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, is suspending import duties and taxes on essential food items to make them more affordable.
“We are committed to implementing this measure effectively to address the issue of hunger in our nation. Additionally, we have streamlined export processes to ensure Nigerian goods reach international markets efficiently.”
The customs chief also warned that disruptions in the supply chain could affect foreign investments, distort trades, promote instability, increase scarcity, and hinder revenue collection.
