EFCC Operatives Arrests FUTA Students For Alleged Internet Fraud

In the early hours of Wednesday, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a raid on the off-campus student accommodations of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA) in Akure, Ondo State, arresting several students in the process.

The operatives were said to have stormed the students’ lodges around Orita Obele, Roadblock area of the city at about 2:00 am, broke into rooms, and apprehended the students, who were suspected to be involved in internet fraud.

It was gathered that many of the students initially thought the operatives were kidnappers until much later when they found that they were EFCC officials, from the Benin Zonal Command of the commission.

The Director of Corporate Communications and Protocol of FUTA, Adegbenro Adebanjo, disclosed in a telephone interview on Wednesday that the arrests were not carried out within or around the campus of the university.

He stated that it is yet to be confirmed whether the persons arrested are students of FUTA, adding that the university’s management will soon react officially to the incident.

The latest night raid goes against the directive by the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

Last November, Olukoyede banned operatives of the commission from carrying out sting operations at night.

He gave the directive in reaction to the arrest of 69 suspected internet fraudsters in Ile-Ife, Osun State, by operatives of the Ibadan zonal command of the EFCC.
