Fallen Truck Leads To Heavy Traffic On Abuja Airport Road

A collapsed container truck between the FHA Bridge and the ShopRite Pedestrian Bridge along the Lugbe-Airport Road in Abuja caused a major traffic gridlock on Tuesday morning. The incident, which occurred around 9 am, forced outbound vehicles heading toward the airport to divert to the opposite lane, resulting in severe congestion.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT Sector Commander, Muta’a Chorrie, confirmed the incident, clarifying that it involved a fallen container, not a tanker as initially reported. “It was just a container that fell on the road. We are making efforts to remove it and manage the traffic situation,” Chorrie said while noting that officers were actively working to clear the road.

The gridlock lasted for about two to three hours as the fallen 40-foot container blocked three-quarters of the Expressway. Chorrie confirmed that no casualties were recorded but described the challenge of removing the heavy container from the road.

There were no casualties. The 40-foot container blocked most of the road, causing the hold-up, and people began driving erratically, complicating efforts to restore order. However, we have now managed to clear the road,” he explained.

Efforts to remove the container and control the chaotic traffic flow eventually restored normal movement on the busy route.
