Federal Government Alerts 22 States, FCT to Imminent Heavy Rainfall, Flooding Risks
The Federal Government has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over the coming days. The predictions, provided by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, cover two critical periods: August 30 to September 2, 2024, and September 2 to 3, 2024.
During these periods, areas in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Rivers, Niger, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara states are expected to experience significant rainfall that may lead to severe flooding. The affected locations include major towns and cities, such as Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Kano in Kano State, and Gusau in Zamfara State. The ministry also highlighted the potential for flood conditions in communities along the Niger River, urging residents downstream of the Jebba Dam to evacuate immediately due to the rising water levels.
The government extended its flood warnings to additional locations in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Plateau, Niger, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Kogi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Benue, Enugu, Cross River states, and various parts of the FCT. These areas are also at risk of flooding from September 2 to 3, 2024, as heavy rains continue.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the recent flooding across 29 states in Nigeria has already claimed 192 lives. The flooding, driven by unprecedented rainfall and the rising levels of the Niger and Benue rivers, has caused widespread devastation. The federal government’s warnings aim to mitigate further loss of life and property by urging affected communities to take necessary precautions, including evacuation where necessary.
Residents in the identified areas are advised to stay alert, follow official updates, and cooperate with local authorities to ensure their safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
