FG Issues Travel Alert To Nigerians Over Violence In The UK
The Federal Government has issued a travel advisory for its citizens in the United Kingdom as a result of the escalating violence and unrest following recent riots.
This advisory was signed by Ambassador Eche Abu-Ode, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Monday.
According to Reuters, violent protests broke out in various towns and cities across Britain after a knife attack at a children’s dance class in Southport, northwest England, resulted in the deaths of three girls and injuries to 10 people last Monday.
Anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups exploited the girls’ deaths, spreading misinformation that the suspected attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. However, police have clarified that the suspect was born in Britain and are not treating the incident as an act of terrorism.
After the development, the government advised citizens to avoid political processions, protests, rallies, and marches. They should also steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings and remain vigilant and self-aware at all times.
The statement read in part, “There is an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of three young girls at a concert.
“The violence has assumed dangerous proportions as evidenced by reported attacks on Law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.
“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant and take measures as follows: Avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches. Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings. Be vigilant and self-aware at all times.”
The ministry encouraged citizens to contact the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for relevant information via email (hc@nigeriahc.org.uk) or phone (+442078391244).
