Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal has appointed Bala Gusau to serve as the State’s Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC) chairman.

The appointment was in a Friday statement by the Senior Special Assistant (Media), Office of the Secretary to the State Government Suleman Tudu.

“Based on the powers conferred on him by the relevant provisions of the Zamfara State Electoral Laws, Governor Dauda Lawal has approved the appointment of Bala Aliyu Gusau as the new Chairman for the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC),” the statement read.

According to him, the appointment followed the demise of the Commission’s former Chairman.

He quoted the Secretary to the State Government Abubakar Nakwada as saying the appointment is subject to confirmation by the Zamfara State House of Assembly.

The appointee has two postgraduate certificates in leadership and development from Galilee College Israel and Kansas State University, USA. He also holds a B.Sc Ed (Economics) from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto after his NCE.

He said, “The appointee has an illustrious career in public service spanning three decades, rising through the ranks to the Director in the Zamfara State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning before his transfer to the federal civil service where he served in different capacities in the National Television Authority including Zonal Director (Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara) and Director Special Duties, NTA Headquarters, Abuja.

“He also served as the Permanent Member, of Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board before this appointment.

“Governor Lawal expects the appointee to bring his wealth of experience to bear in driving the ZASIEC’s vision for conducting free, fair, and credible local government elections in the state.”

The state is expected, like many others, to conduct a local government election in the coming months following the Supreme Court verdict that granted autonomy to local governments.

Following the landmark verdict, the Federal Government mandated states to conduct council polls.
