How To Prepare Miya Taushe (Pumpkin Soup)

Miyan Taushe is a savory Nigerian pumpkin stew/soup that is native to the Hausa and Fulani tribes of Northern Nigeria. It is commonly eaten with fufu/swallow, rice, and even naan bread.

The soup is made from pumpkin and is mostly prepared with yakuwa leaf, dawadawa (locust beans), crayfish, meat, onions, and spices.

The dish can be prepared with any ripe pumpkin, and goat meat is commonly used natively, but beef, mutton, or any other protein can be used as well.

It is usually prepared with ripe pumpkin meat and can be served with a variety of swallows such as masa/waina (rice cake) or tuwo shinkafa (rice balls). Here are the ingredients and steps to prepare Miyan Taushe:

The ingredients for making Miyan Taushe include palm oil, onions, dried pepper powder, fresh pepper, spinach, Yakuwa leaves, thyme, beef, and habanero peppers.

 

Steps:

Wash and slice the leafy vegetable.

Wash the fermented locust beans and set aside.

Wash the goat meat and pour into a saucepan with a cup of water.

Add pumpkin, chopped onions, garlic, and salt to taste.

Cook on medium heat for about 30 minutes until the meat is soft and the pumpkin is dissolved in the stock.

Add the roasted peanuts and cook for another 5 minutes.

Add the leafy vegetable and cook for another 5 minutes.

Serve hot with your choice of swallow.

Miyan Taushe can be prepared with any ripe pumpkin and any protein of your choice such as beef, mutton, or any poultry available.
