Kwara Allows Commercial Vehicles Back On Ahmadu Bello Way
The Kwara State Government has reversed its earlier ban on shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles using Ahmadu Bello Way, a major route in Ilorin leading to Government House. This decision, announced on Wednesday, marks a shift from the restrictions set last week, when various vehicle categories were barred from the route to enhance security around key government facilities.
Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, clarified the new regulation in a statement released by the ministry’s Press Secretary, Olajide Abolarin. The updated directive permits mini-shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-hailing services on Ahmadu Bello Way, which is home to vital government facilities, ministries, and security installations. According to Olododo, “This clarification is necessary for public awareness.”
While some vehicles are now allowed access, the ban remains in effect for tricycles (Keke Napep), motorcycles (Okada), and heavy-duty trucks. Olododo emphasized that these restrictions are due to security considerations and the need to ensure a safe and orderly environment around high-traffic public areas.
The state had initially restricted various types of vehicles from accessing Ahmadu Bello Way last Friday, with the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Agency tasked to enforce the rule. Non-compliant drivers faced fines of up to N50,000.
Ahmadu Bello Way, a recently rehabilitated route, connects busy commercial and residential areas such as Tanke, Fate, and River Basin. To promote awareness of the restrictions, the Ministry of Works and Transport has started installing signage along the route from Challenge through Ahmadu Bello Way to inform the public of the vehicle access limitations. This ongoing effort underscores the government’s commitment to balancing security needs with accessible public transport.
