NAFDAC Issues Safety Alert On Recalled Nivea deodorant

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning about the recall of Nivea’s Black & White Invisible Roll-on deodorant, 50ml, known for claiming 48-hour protection in African climates. This alert follows a report from the European Union Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products in Brussels. NAFDAC disclosed that the affected deodorant bears the batch number 93529610.

The recall stems from the deodorant’s inclusion of 2-(4-tert-Butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde, a substance prohibited in cosmetics due to its potentially harmful effects. This chemical has been linked to reproductive system harm, risks to fetal health, and skin issues, including irritation and burns. Manufactured in Germany, the product’s Bar Code Number is 42299882.

NAFDAC has advised all parties within the product’s supply chain—importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers—to avoid the handling, distribution, or sale of the affected batch. The agency further urged Nigerians in possession of this product to stop its use immediately and submit it to the nearest NAFDAC office.

In addition, NAFDAC has encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse effects related to regulated products through various channels, including the agency’s pharmacovigilance email (pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng), the online reporting platform on NAFDAC’s website (www.nafdac.gov.ng), and the Med-safety app available on both Android and iOS devices. This measure aims to ensure consumer safety and prevent health risks associated with harmful products.
