NDDC MD Inspects Emergency Repairs On Owerri-Port Harcourt Road
The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has inspected the ongoing emergency repairs on the failed sections of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State. The road, a vital artery for commuters in the Niger Delta region, had deteriorated significantly, prompting urgent intervention by the NDDC.
According to a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, the Commission embarked on the emergency rehabilitation following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address dilapidated roads in the region.
Presidential Mandate
Dr. Ogbuku, accompanied by officials of the NDDC, inspected the progress of the work and received an on-site briefing from the engineers of the construction firm handling the project. He noted that the emergency measures were essential to ensuring the road became motorable and alleviating the suffering of commuters.
“Following a presidential directive to urgently restore the dilapidated sections of regional roads, the NDDC has quickly mobilized construction companies to carry out remedial works to ensure that the people do not suffer unnecessary hardship while traveling,” Ogbuku said.
Commendation for Swift Action
The NDDC Chief Executive expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Federal Government for responding promptly to public outcries about the poor state of roads in the Niger Delta. He assured the public that the restoration work on the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road would be durable and meet high-quality standards.
Community Engagement
Dr. Ogbuku urged local communities and commuters to show patience and understanding during the construction phase, promising that the project would be completed as swiftly as possible.
“As an interventionist agency, we will continue to complement the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by taking measures to ease the stress commuters face daily,” he added.
Positive Reception
The intervention has been well-received by road users. A commercial bus driver, Mr. Kinsley Okorigwe, commended the NDDC for responding promptly to the distress calls of commuters who had endured significant hardship due to the road’s poor condition.
The NDDC Managing Director also lauded the contractor’s commitment to completing the work on time and expressed satisfaction with the quality of the ongoing repairs.
The repair of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road underscores the NDDC’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the Niger Delta, ensuring safer and smoother travel for residents and visitors alike.
