American rapper Nicki Minaj has revealed that her latest collaboration with Afrobeats superstar Davido on the track “If It’s Okay” was designed to infuse the song with an authentic Afrobeats tempo. Nicki disclosed this while responding to a fan on X (formerly Twitter) who praised the synergy between the two artists.

The fan, Tae, wrote, “What drew you to Davido for the song ‘If it’s Okay’? In my opinion, he was an ideal choice for this incredible masterpiece! He was speaking that ish.” In her response, Nicki lauded Davido’s talents, saying, “That man is an incredible writer and melody maker. It’s always a pleasure working with him because of our mutual respect for one another. I asked him to be part of it to bring out the Afro beats tempo/feeling in it a bit more. Naija to the world.”

A Musical Milestone

The track is part of the special 10th-anniversary edition of Nicki Minaj’s critically acclaimed 2014 album, The Pinkprint. The commemorative release features four new tracks, including collaborations with Swae Lee (“Turn Ya Cap Back”), David Guetta, the late Juice WRLD (“Arctic Tundra”), and Davido (“If It’s Okay”).

This marks Nicki and Davido’s second collaboration, following their 2020 hit “Holy Ground,” which appeared on Davido’s album A Better Time. Their renewed partnership has been met with excitement, as fans of both artists celebrate the seamless blend of rap and Afrobeats.

Honoring Afrobeats
