NLC Calls Emergency NEC Meeting Following Ajaero’s Police Summon
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following the police invitation of its National President, Joe Ajaero, on allegations of financing terrorism. The NEC meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. today, Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House. All heads of NLC affiliates and state chapters are expected to attend.
The emergency meeting notice, signed by the NLC Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja, follows reports that Ajaero faces charges including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, and cybercrime. The police have instructed Ajaero to report to the IRT Complex in Abbattoir by 10 a.m. today, warning that a warrant of arrest will be issued if he fails to comply.
This development follows a night raid on the NLC national secretariat in Abuja on July 7, conducted by security agents. The police claimed the raid was to uncover incriminating documents related to a figure deemed a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. The NLC has rejected the police’s explanation, demanding the release of detained members and seized documents. Additionally, the NLC has criticized recent government efforts to influence its internal affairs, including proposed reductions in the tenure of trade union leaders.
