Northern Forum Supports Tinubu’s Proposed Tax Reforms Amid Concerns From Governors
The Northern Economic Development Forum has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s new tax reform policies, countering fears raised by Northern governors who recently voiced opposition to the proposed reforms. The forum stated that the North stands to benefit significantly from the tax reform initiative, and called for understanding and constructive engagement rather than rejection.
While the Northern Governors have urged the National Assembly to dismiss the tax reform bills, citing potential negative impacts on the region, the forum assured that the reforms are designed to enhance and modernize Nigeria’s tax system without overburdening citizens or businesses. President Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council have sponsored a series of bills aimed at restructuring tax processes, establishing a unified revenue service, and simplifying compliance for both individuals and businesses.
Dr. Mustapha Ibrahim Gusau, who signed the forum’s statement, highlighted that the tax reform laws will not introduce new taxes, increase existing rates, or complicate compliance requirements. Instead, the reforms focus on optimizing current tax structures, harmonizing revenue collection, and fostering an environment conducive to job creation and economic growth.
The forum also emphasized that the bills will:
•Promote efficiency by unifying tax administration across federal, state, and local levels, thereby reducing redundancies.
•Modernize tax laws to align with international standards, making Nigeria more competitive on a global scale.
•Support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by simplifying compliance, encouraging broader economic participation, and providing a more inclusive tax environment.
•Enhance transparency and integrity in revenue collection to build public trust and ensure accountability in government spending.
According to the forum, these reforms aim to establish a more equitable distribution of tax responsibilities and increase Nigeria’s tax base, benefiting the North and the entire nation. The forum also noted plans to launch an awareness campaign across the 19 northern states to inform citizens of the potential benefits of the reforms.
Dr. Gusau’s statement urged northerners and all Nigerians to view the tax reform as a positive step toward economic development and stability. “The reforms will strengthen Nigeria’s economic landscape and align with global best practices,” the forum stated, calling for calm and constructive engagement rather than tension or alarm.
