Obasanjo Decries Corruption As A National Menace At Justice Ayoola’s Celebration Of Life
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described corruption as a pervasive and destructive force hindering Nigeria’s progress. He made this statement on Friday during the celebration of life for the late Justice Olayinka Ayoola, former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The event, held at the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Agodi, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, was a tribute to Ayoola, who passed away on August 20, 2024, at the age of 90.
In his address, Obasanjo acknowledged the efforts of Justice Ayoola and the ICPC in combating corruption during his tenure, but he lamented the persistent challenges posed by the “cancer” of corruption. He stated, “Corruption is a great monster that is still battling with us in the country. It’s not that ICPC and Ayoola had not done their job or that even I, who appointed him, had not done what I could have done; it was the pressure of this great cancer of corruption.”
Obasanjo further celebrated Justice Ayoola as a distinguished figure whose contributions to Nigeria and the African continent left a lasting legacy. “Today, I’m standing before you to appreciate the life of this great man, great Nigerian, great African, and man of the world,” he said.
Tributes to a Man of Integrity
Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, reflected on Ayoola’s legacy, emphasizing his role in upholding Nigeria’s reputation through his service. “He has left indelible footprints in the sand of time… He would be sorely missed. He left a legacy we should be proud of,” she remarked.
The Bishop of the Diocese, Agodi, Revd Simeon Onaleke, highlighted Ayoola’s moral courage and dedication. In his sermon titled “Serving God’s Purpose in Our Generation,” Onaleke advocated for strict measures against corrupt politicians, calling for legislation that bars them from seeking re-election. He urged Nigerians to emulate Ayoola’s virtues, saying, “Do things that will make people remember you… Ayoola fought many battles, not with guns or swords. He did well.”
Gathering of Dignitaries
The event was graced by a host of dignitaries, including Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Hajo Sarki Bello; Oyo State Chief Judge, Justice Iyabo Yerima; and Supreme Court Justices Adamu Jauro, Chidiebere Uwa, and Habeeb Adewale Abiru. Other notable attendees included Dr. Emmanuel Olanrewaju Ayoola, Ambassador Godwin Adama, Dr. Wale Babalakin, and Mr. Folu Olamiti, former ICPC spokesperson.
Justice Ayoola, remembered as a man of integrity and excellence, leaves behind a legacy of service and a call for all Nigerians to take a stand against corruption. His life serves as a reminder of the values of honesty, dedication, and selfless service that can transform society.
