Obasanjo: Insecurity In Nigeria Worse Than During My Administration

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for urgent measures to address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, which he says has engulfed parts of the country. He made these remarks in Bauchi State on Sunday while inaugurating road projects initiated by Governor Bala Mohammed. Reflecting on his time in office, Obasanjo pointed out that the security situation today is far worse, noting that his administration had prioritized safeguarding lives and property.

Obasanjo advocated for community policing as a solution, emphasizing that local communities are better positioned to identify potential security threats because they are familiar with their neighbors. He stressed this point during his visit to the palace of the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, encouraging traditional rulers to support this model of policing in their respective communities.

He underscored the need for collective efforts in tackling the nation’s challenges, drawing on his administration’s experiences when decisions were made collaboratively. He called for unity, peace, and a shared focus to move the country forward, expressing optimism that Nigeria could still prosper with the right actions.

In a separate act of philanthropy, Obasanjo also announced the donation of hearing aids to 2,000 people in Bauchi State, as part of a larger initiative under his foundation. He recounted his own experience of partial deafness, which led him to establish the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation. The foundation has since helped thousands of Nigerians receive ear treatments and hearing aids.

Governor Bala Mohammed, while addressing the inauguration, highlighted his administration’s focus on infrastructure development, particularly road construction and rehabilitation, to foster progress in Bauchi State. The roads inaugurated included significant projects like the dualization of the Awala-Maiduguri road and the Kano road to Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, among others. These projects, totaling over 1,482 kilometers, are part of the government’s broader plan to drive economic growth and improve the lives of citizens across the state.
