Ogun Teacher Faces Investigation After Student Dies Following Intense Punishment
A tragic incident has unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, where a student identified as Ariyo has reportedly died following an alleged severe disciplinary action by a teacher. According to details shared by activist Adetoun on social media, Ariyo was subjected to 162 strokes of the cane, allegedly for breaking a dustbin, leading to his collapse and eventual death.
The incident began when a teacher brought a dustbin to Ariyo’s classroom, instructing students to handle it carefully. When Ariyo jokingly commented that the dustbin was bought with students’ money, the teacher, reportedly angered by the remark, escalated the matter to the school principal. In response, the principal allegedly instructed the teacher to punish Ariyo, leading to the reported caning.
Witnesses claim that after Ariyo collapsed during the punishment, there was a delay in getting him medical assistance, and by the time he was finally taken to the hospital, he had passed away. A senior police officer, though not officially authorized to speak, confirmed the incident and described how tensions rose in the community before the police stepped in to calm the situation.
The Ogun State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter, and efforts to reach their spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of this report. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar tragedies.
