Ondo Commences Payment Of N3.2bn Gratuity Backlog To Retirees
Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has commenced the third batch payment of a sum of N3.2 billion backlog of gratuities to retirees in the state.
The payment is made up of N2.2 billion in gratuities to state civil service retirees and N1 billion in gratuities to local government retirees.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office in Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated that his administration will continue to prioritize the welfare of the senior citizens who have served the state diligently in their prime years.
He said, “Today is another landmark in our avowed commitment to the welfare of our people, including workers in service and retirees in the state.
“By this sure and steady mode of bulk payment, all retirees should rest assured that sooner than later, the backlog of gratuities would be fully paid. We consider this a duty despite other pressing financial commitments of government and the limited resources available.”
He noted that in January 2024, N1.2 billion was paid while between January and June 2024, N1.18 billion was disbursed in piecemeal payments to retirees facing financial hardship.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, also expressed his appreciation to the governor for his genuine concern for the well-being of retirees in the state.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Ondo State, Johnson Osunyemi, gave kudos to the administration of Governor Aiyedatiwa for remembering the retirees.
He noted that the payment is a significant relief for the retirees, as it has been long awaited.
Osunyemi lamented that due to long delays, many of the retirees have died while waiting for their entitlements.
