Premier League Clubs Vote In Favour Of Keeping VAR
Wolves initiated a vote on VAR’s use in the 2024-25 season by formally submitting a resolution to the Premier League in May.
For VAR to be abolished, 14 of the 20 Premier League clubs needed to vote in favor.
However, BBC Sport reports that Wolves did not gain support at Thursday’s annual general meeting.
The Premier League is under increasing pressure to modify VAR, which has been in use since the 2019-20 season.
At the meeting, it was confirmed that semi-automated offsides would be introduced in the autumn and that in-game VAR announcements would be implemented.
These announcements, used during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, will have referees explain post-VAR decisions to fans in the stadiums.
Wolves triggered the motion after a series of decisions went against Gary O’Neil’s team last season.
The Midlands club listed nine reasons to support their proposal to ban VAR, including the impact on goal celebrations, hostility towards match officials, and the length of time needed to reach decisions.
