Presidency Criticises Peter Obi Over Comments on Stampedes In Oyo, Anambra, And Abuja
The presidency, on Monday, criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his remarks regarding the recent tragic stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja that claimed several lives, including children. Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, conveyed this criticism via his X handle, describing Obi’s comments as lacking statesmanship and decency.
Dare stated:
“When seeking someone who benefits from the misfortune of others or from confusion — what the Yoruba people describe as Aríje nínú Màdàrú — look no further than Peter Obi. His recent comments on the avoidable tragedies in Anambra and Oyo states lack statesmanship and decency, even as he clings to the fading echoes of his much-vaunted political victory. This attempt to score cheap political points falls short of responsible leadership.”
Context of the Tragedies
The tragic stampedes resulted in the loss of many lives:
•Ibadan, Oyo State: Around 40 children died during a stampede at a children’s fair on Wednesday.
•Maitama, Abuja: On Saturday, 10 lives were lost in a stampede during the distribution of rice and other palliatives at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
•Okija, Anambra State: At least 17 residents died in a stampede over rice palliatives.
Tinubu Administration’s Response
Dare emphasized that President Bola Tinubu cancelled all engagements, expressed deep sadness over the tragedies, and ordered an immediate investigation. He highlighted Tinubu’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges plaguing the country to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“In times of unfortunate tragedy, leaders are expected to speak responsibly and offer support. These incidents have highlighted critical issues that must be addressed,” Dare noted.
Peter Obi’s Reaction
Reacting to the tragedies via tweets, Peter Obi described the stampedes as systemic failures indicative of Nigeria’s deep socio-economic challenges. He expressed concern over the country’s abundant resources being insufficient to prevent hunger-related deaths among citizens.
“It is heartbreaking that despite our fertile land and abundant resources, Nigerians are dying of hunger,” Obi said, attributing the incidents to poor governance and systemic lapses.
Presidency’s Criticism of Obi’s Remarks
Dare accused Obi of politicizing the tragedies for personal gain, contrasting his approach with Tinubu’s, which he described as empathetic and focused on solutions.
“True leadership requires compassion and decisive action, not opportunistic commentary,” Dare remarked.
Broader Implications
The incidents have sparked nationwide discussions on poverty, hunger, and governance. Analysts have pointed out that these tragedies underline the urgent need for systemic reforms to address food insecurity, poverty, and equitable distribution of resources.
While the presidency defends Tinubu’s approach to the tragedies, Obi’s comments have reignited debates on the effectiveness of leadership in tackling Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges. The events serve as a somber reminder of the pressing need for both immediate and long-term solutions to prevent further loss of life.
