Prices Of Onions Drop In Enugu

The price of onions has dropped to a certain extent in major markets in Enugu.

A market survey conducted showed that a bag of onions now sells for between N58,000 and N65,000 as opposed to the initial N70,000 and N80,500 some months ago.

An onion trader at the New Akwata in Garki Market, attributed the reduction in prices to increased number of stored onions brought from the northern part of the country.

According to the trader; ”Due to the increased number of onions brought in from the north, the scarcity of onions is now a thing of the past. Places like Sokoto, Kano and Jos, where we buy them from are now experiencing surplus”, the trader, Ilora said.

Mrs Clara Eze, another onions trader at the same market said that the price of onions would further reduce as its time of plenty was fast approaching.

The traders blamed the high costs of onions months ago to increased logistics charges like land charges, transportation and money paid to truck pushers.

They appealed to the government to build government facilities for traders to preserve perishable items such as onions in order for it to be available all-year.

Recall that earlier this year, there was a high demand of onions as a result of the high rates.
