Protesting NLC, TUC Members Block The Entrance Of Abuja Airport

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Thursday blocked the entrance of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International in Abuja.

The move is part of actions by the unions after an attack on the president of the NLC Joe Ajaero in Imo State.

But what began as a state issue has now taken a national undertone as the protesting unionists stormed the venue around 8:58 a.m., grounding aviation activities in one of the country’s busiest airports.

They were at the airport to stop flights going to Owerri, the Imo State capital, in a move that left hundreds of passengers going the route stranded.

The NLC and TUC declared a nationwide strike, which will begin on Tuesday, November 14th, also because of the face-off with the Imo State Government.

The workers’ unions started the procession as they all filed out in a convoy heading to the airport. The protesters blocked both the entry and exit ways of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The protesters tried to enter the airport but were stopped by the military at the checkpoint. As a result of the refusal, the protesters blocked the entry and exit points of the airport, causing heavy traffic of vehicles on both sides, thereby forcing travellers to make their way into the airport on foot.
