Reckless Driving Causes Fatal Collision On Third Mainland Bridge, Eight Sustain Injuries
A tragic accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State on Monday, resulting in one death and eight injuries. The head-on collision involved two Mazda commercial buses with license plates LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH. According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash was caused by reckless high-speed driving as both buses were allegedly engaged in a dangerous chase from the Adeniji Adele area.
LASTMA officials swiftly intervened, rescuing eight passengers who had suffered severe fractures. The injured were immediately transported to Gbagada General Hospital by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical attention. Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations also provided security support during the rescue operation, ensuring order and helping restore normalcy.
In the aftermath, LASTMA reiterated its commitment to road safety, urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and drive cautiously. The agency expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
In a separate incident on the same day, a Honda CRV with registration number AKD 743 HV overturned near the University of Lagos’ waterfront, inbound Iyana-Oworonsoki. Fortunately, there were no casualties. LASTMA officers quickly cleared the scene to prevent further traffic disruption. The crash was also attributed to excessive speeding.
